Full Refurbishment & Extensions – Raby Mere
Heritage Meets Modern Living
This large-scale project in Raby Mere involved transforming an 1800s property into a striking modern family home, while retaining the charm and character of the original building. With two major flat roof extensions, a full interior refurbishment, and a seamless glass link between old and new, this was one of the most technically ambitious projects we’ve delivered to date.
What We Did
We took the original house back to brick and added two major flat roof extensions, increasing the ground floor footprint by 250m². One extension was built to house a modern open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, the social heart of the new home. The other included a fully air-conditioned home gym and pool room, each with their own toilets and showers.
These two wings were joined by a stunning glass link, featuring an “up-and-over” section that lets natural light flood through and creates a dramatic architectural feature.
Inside, the entire property was refurbished from top to bottom. Freshly plastered walls, new bathrooms, and a luxury kitchen were all installed with precision and care. Oversized roof windows (12m² each) and expansive sliding patio doors bring in natural light and connect the indoor spaces directly to the new pool area.
A Challenge We Overcame
One of the most complex elements of the project was the removal of the entire side wall of the original house. To do this safely, we installed a heavy-duty portal frame system, with each steel column sitting on its own reinforced pad foundation.
The structural and logistical challenges of this phase were significant, requiring detailed planning, engineering input, and a coordinated team effort. But the result is seamless: a wide, open span that connects the old building to the new spaces with strength and elegance.
The Result
The finished home now offers the best of both worlds – character where it counts, and light-filled modern luxury where it matters most. The spacious new layout supports busy family life, while the pool room, gym, and flowing open-plan zones offer space to relax, recharge, and enjoy.
It’s a complete transformation that reflects the client’s vision and showcases what’s possible when smart design and skilled construction come together.
